about

(note : the languages used in this piece are Mandarin, Taiwanese and Japanese)

The area of Guangneng, located behind the Museum Of Contemporary Art of Taipei, Taiwan, is right now in a period of transition. In the past, the train line crossed this highly active commercial zone, bringing goods and passengers. Then the train line was buried underground, the economic activities moved to other areas of the city. The wanderer can still see the old shops filled with mechanical parts of vehicles, one of the main business of Guangneng. But no one knows how long they will last because of the urban renewal and very high speculation on urban space of Taiwan's capital.

Before the imminent transformation, we visited the area and made interviews with inhabitants, collecting the memories of their childhood or their youth : local economy and connection with other industrial areas of Taiwan, education and constructions under the Japanese colonization, the arrival of Chinese army and the daily life on the sides of the train line.

These words were assembled with sounds of some trains recorded elsewhere but reminding the old times of Guangneng, edited and mixed with sounds of nowadays environment and music (composed for the occasion and found in old vinyl records). The final result was partly a documentary, partly a sound creation, and was broadcasted inside some shops newly opened in Guangneng (composing a new, sometimes fashionable, trend in the area) in collaboration with their owners. That work was another kind of mapping, not a geographical one but a fluid and imaginative guide to this suburb. Its aim was to reactivate this place before the new buildings would erase the last traces of memory. It is a map of the threads weaved between inhabitants and their streets before they would become too loose.

"Train de nuit pour Guangneng", was recorded and composed by Yannick Dauby.
Commission by MOCA Taipei for the festival "2013 Street Fun‧Fun Street‧Wandering in Chifeng"
This project wouldn't have been possible without the help of Yi-Hsiang Hsu (MOCA) and of the mayor of Guangneng.
